Meet our July ‘26 Featured Family: The Colon family
1. Tell us more about your family.
My husband, Angel, and I live in Fredericksburg, Virginia, with our two children, Olivia and Levi. We have been married for over 15 years and have built our family around faith, service, and caring for others. Our daughter Olivia is a bright and compassionate teenager who loves art and has a heart for helping people. Our son Levi is a liver transplant recipient. In 2021, I had the privilege of becoming his living liver donor. That experience changed our family forever and gave us a unique understanding of the challenges children with complex medical needs face, as well as the incredible gift of hope that comes through loving support and medical care.
We are active members of our church, where we serve in worship, youth, and AV ministries. Our faith is central to who we are and guides the way we love, serve, and welcome others into our family.
2. Tell us more about your heart for adoption.
Our heart for adoption began long before we started this process. We have always believed that family is built through love, commitment, and God's calling—not simply biology.
After walking through our son Levi's liver transplant journey, we gained a deep understanding of what it means to advocate for a child with complex medical needs. In 2021, I became Levi's living liver donor, and our family experienced firsthand the challenges, uncertainties, and victories that come with transplant life.
As we prayed about growing our family, adoption remained on our hearts. We felt God leading us to open our home to a child who needed the love, stability, and support of a permanent family. We didn't know exactly what that would look like, but we trusted Him to guide our path.
We believe every child deserves to be known, loved, and given the opportunity to thrive. Adoption is our response to God's call to care for children and to welcome another child into our family with the same unconditional love we have for our biological children.
3. Tell us more about your adoption journey so far.
When we first decided it was time to pursue adoption, we didn't have a specific country or child in mind. We simply felt called to adopt and trusted God to lead the way.
Shortly after beginning the process, we learned about a young boy in Colombia. As we read his story, one detail immediately stood out to us—he was a kidney transplant recipient. Having already walked the transplant journey with our son Levi, transplant life was something we understood deeply. We knew the appointments, medications, uncertainties, and advocacy that come with protecting a transplanted organ. More importantly, we understood the resilience and strength these children develop.
As we continued learning about his story, we discovered another remarkable connection: his kidney transplant took place on Levi's birthday. While we don't believe every coincidence carries special meaning, this felt like a deeply personal confirmation that God was weaving our stories together in ways we could never have planned ourselves.
The more we learned about him, the more strongly we felt that God had brought us together. Rather than choosing Colombia, it often feels as though Colombia chose us. What began as a general call to adoption quickly became a very specific calling to this child.
Since then, we have completed education requirements, paperwork, home study requirements, and countless hours of preparation. While the process has been long and sometimes overwhelming, our commitment has only grown stronger. We are eagerly working through the final steps and praying we'll be able to bring him home by the end of this year.
4. Tell us more about the child you are adopting.
We are adopting a courageous young boy from Colombia. While we want to honor his privacy and recognize that much of his story belongs to him, we are grateful to share a little about why he has captured our hearts.
When we first learned about him, one detail immediately stood out to us: he is a kidney transplant recipient. Our son Levi received a life-saving liver transplant, so transplant life is something our family understands deeply. We know the challenges, sacrifices, and ongoing care that come with protecting a transplanted organ, but we also know the incredible hope and second chances that transplantation provides.
As we learned more about his story, we discovered that his kidney transplant took place on Levi's birthday. That connection felt incredibly meaningful to our family and strengthened our belief that God was bringing our stories together. What ultimately drew us to him, however, was not his medical history. It was his resilience, courage, and the joy he continues to show despite the hardships he has faced. The more we learned about him, the more we saw him not as a child we were considering adopting, but as our son.
Because of our family's experiences, we feel uniquely equipped to advocate for his medical needs and support him as he continues to grow and thrive. Most importantly, we look forward to providing him with what every child deserves: a permanent family, unconditional love, stability, and the opportunity to build a future surrounded by people who will always be in his corner. We cannot wait to welcome him home and help him write the next chapter of his story as a beloved member of our family.
Prayer Requests:
God's continued guidance throughout the remaining steps of our adoption journey.
Protection and good health for our son while he waits to come home.
Wisdom for the medical teams, social workers, judges, and officials involved in the process.
Smooth travel and transition when the time comes to bring him home.
Emotional preparation for all of our children as our family grows.
Financial provision as we navigate the significant expenses associated with international adoption and medical care.
Patience, strength, and faith as we wait for the final pieces of the process to come together.
